Nantucket. This historic island 30 miles out to sea is home to 15,000 year-round residents and exponentially more summer residents from around the world.
Several noteworthy things are located in Nantucket. The happiest place on Earth is here (no, not Disney World, but Cisco Brewery...see below). Also, the Res Ipsa flagship store is here (see below). But did you know that JFK had a Cold War-era underground bunker located here?
Res Ipsa flagship store
In the August 2018 edition of N Magazine, Deborah Halber's "Portal to the Past", led the world into a small but significant "bunker" on the southeastern edge of the island. Known for its intention to safely harbor JFK during the Cold War, the "bunker" built into Tom Nevers Field - previously home of one of several naval bases from the 1950's located on the eastern seaboard to detect foreign submarine activity - was never actually used as a presidential fallout shelter.
Take a look inside the "bunker" and read about the efforts of the local Parks and Recreation Commission and Select Board to revitalize the bunker that served our former 35th President of the United States of America during a critical moment in our history.
