A Brief History
The Dopp kit is sometimes known as the toilet bag, shaving bag, and travel kit. In the early 1900's, Charles Doppelt and his nephew designed the original leather Dopp Kit. The name 'Dopp' was derived from Doppelt's last name. Although they were said to be issued as standard equipment for US soldiers in the military during WWI, Dopp Kits were popularized by soldiers during WWII. The Dopp brand name was sold to Samsonite in the early 1970s. In 1979, Buxton purchased the Dopp brand and continued to create the leather Dopp Kit. (The "Dopp Kit" trademark was canceled in 2003.)
In 2013, Res Ipsa entered the 'Dopp Kit' fray when we introduced the Kilim Dopp Kit as one of our original three luxury kilim products. Why a Kilim Dopp Kit? First, it is a travel product. Second, the market was wide open for a colorful, useful kilim Dopp kit. Our co-founders Odini and Joshua observed that most people, especially men--if they use anything at all beyond a clear plastic zip bags--use a crusty, petrified Dopp kit that deserves to remain hidden in another bag. Third, traveling in style extends to your toiletries. There is something to be said for lifting a beautiful Dopp kit out of your bag and setting it on the bathroom counter when you arrive at your destination. Fourth, it is the perfect gift.
